About

Photograph by Carsten Lund Thomsen

After twelve years in Amsterdam Stephanie returned to the UK in 2019.

Having first trained as an actor, costume and set designer, working in the theatre, she then moved into the world of photography, film and television.

She went on to study painting at the The Byam Shaw School of Art, in London. Her key influences were her mentor, the painter and print-maker, Francis West, who very sadly died in 2015 and the Welsh artist and writer Mark Harrell.

In 2021 she enrolled on the Defining Practice course at the Newlyn School of Art in St Ives, in order to engage with other artists and establish her practice in her new environment. Having gained so much from her year at Newlyn, she embarked on the Studio Practice course in the summer of 2022.

Photography – and how light changes everything – has played a fundamental rôle in her life, honing the way she sees the world, constantly informing her imagination.

And with drawing at its heart, her work is both representational and abstract, as she moves between the allegorical, the mythical and the natural worlds, perpetually re-imagined.

Travelling extensively throughout her life, living and working on four continents, she has gathered a wealth of visual and cultural material, which continues to nurture her endeavours.

Stephanie now lives and works on Devon’s north coast.

Upcoming Exhibition

We Know Who We Are – Icons for Uncertain Times

With drawing at its heart, my work is both representational and abstract, moving between the allegorical, the mythical and the natural worlds perpetually re-interpreted. Recent world events, both environmental and political, however, have presented questions about the nature of my work and what it means: how do we make sense of these events through our work, how can we find our voice and how can we make a difference?

Exhibition runs Saturday 11 May to Saturday 15 Jun 2024
Wednesdays – Saturdays 10am-4pm
